How to cut styrofoam

The advantages of Styrofoam over other building materials is ease of shaping.

Thin pieces of Styrofoam can be cut using a blade.

Thicker material should be cut with the hot wire. The hot wire will leave a very smooth edge. It can also easily be shaped with sandpaper or files. It can also be machined on the CNC router.

Styrofoam contains vinyl, which releases chlorine gas when laser cut. Styrofoam should never be laser cut.

It should never be cut on the bandsaw as it will release fine particles of dust into the air.
