How to cut acrylic

Acrylic sheet is best cut on the laser cutter. The heat of the laser cutter leaves a polished edge on each cut.

It is possible to cut acrylic sheets using the CNC router, a bandsaw or using hand saws. These techniques can chip the edges of the acrylic which can be unsightly. They will also leave the acrylic with a rough, frosted edge. These edges are often so rough that they will not glue onto other pieces of acrylic.

If you plan to glue your acrylic pieces together we recommend laser cutting the pieces. If the pieces are cut using a saw you will need to sand the edges until they are smooth.

Acrylic shapes such as rods and tubes are typically cut using a bandsaw or handsaw.
