What materials can I use with the bandsaws?

The bandsaw is primarily used to cut wood. It is ideal for cutting plywood and both hardwood and softwood timber. Never cut MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) on the bandsaw. It creates fine dust which can cause damage to lungs.

The bandsaw can also be used to cut plastics such as acrylic and polycarbonate. Unlike the laser cutter, the bandsaw will leave a rough edge on the plastic. These rough edges will not glue together properly. If plan to glue the object together it should be cut on the laser cutter.

Sheet material is ideal for the bandsaw. It is possible to cut round and irregular shaped material, such as tree branches, but care must be taken. It might be necessary to make a jig to hold the object. This will stop the blade pulling the object out of your hand or pulling your hand into the blade.
